Go
back in time on a day trip to two of the most popular Mayan Sites
in the country, Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Lunch
is provided.
Xunantunich
being the second tallest ruin in the country is located across
from San Jose Succotz, a few miles from The Belize western border. The
partially-excavated and largest pyramid, El Castillo, rises 130
feet above the main plaza and offers an impressive Panoramic View
of Belize's Cayo District and.Guatemala. Two major areas
of Xunantunich are El Castillo, which is known for its wall paintings,
a banded stucco decoration which at one time extended around the
entire pyramid. The other is the Impressive Museum that displays
a three-dimensional model of the entire Xunantunich site, as well
as depicting the evolution of Maya civilization. Three stelae from
the site are on display also.
Cahal
Pech is located on a hill overlooking San Ignacio just 15 minutes
away from the ruin Xunantunich. It consists of late pre-classic temples
and two separate ball courts displaying fine examples of Maya craftsmanship,
suggesting that this site was a hilltop residence of royalty and
their cadre. It was abandoned by 800 AD. The site consists of 34
structures on two acres. The tour will last approximately 45-60
minutes. A Visitor Center is available which contains artifacts
and a reconstructed model of the site.
Caracol:
A Full Day Mayan Ruin Tour with packed lunch: Caracol meaning (The
Snail) is two hours drive from the hotel. The site was discovered in 1938. In 1986, an elaborately carved stone was discovered which described
a victory by Caracol over Tikal. This discovery positioned Caracol
as the supreme Maya city. Its largest pyramid stands 140 ft (44
meters) high. Caracol's central core today, as seen by visitors,
consists of three plaza groups surrounding a central acropolis and
two ball courts, along with a number of smaller structures. It is
considered the tallest man made structure in Belize.
